One of our favorite Christmas traditions happen nightly for weeks before Christmas. We begin December 1st with the reading of a page in our Advent book each night. Each page has a sturdy door to open and tells part of the Christmas story. The boys take turns opening the doors, and even though they know the story, they are always excited to see what comes next.
The weekend before Christmas, we put up the tree and decorate the house. From that night on, after reading the Advent book, turn off all of the lights except for the Christmas tree. Then we play our favorite Christmas music and dance. We dance like crazy, as if we know how. The kids have always called this part of the evening “Atmosphere.” As in “Mom, is it almost time for Atmosphere?” or “Hey Dad! We’re still doing “Atmosphere” tonight, right?”
I know that one day my boys may feel “to old” to dance as uninhibitedly as they do now. But until then, I will relish every moment of our nightly “Atmosphere.”
“For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6
Enjoy your friends. Enjoy your family. Enjoy your traditions. Merry Christmas, Friends!
