Happy Wednesday, Friends! I’m starting a periodic new series today called Real Life Wednesday in order to share a little bit of my Comfortably Domestic happenings between the posts.
Several of you have emailed to ask that I mix in more real life pursuits in with all of the great edibles. I used to regularly write about the random dailiness of life and to be quite honest, I didn’t realize that I had ever stopped writing about the every day. I didn’t realize that with my expansion into social media venues, I transitioned from sharing a periodic random posts on the blog because I share a lot of snippets each day on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. I felt that to write about them here would be redundant…until you told me otherwise! My apologies, Friends. I have to admit that as much as I love the you guys follow me on other media channels, I miss engaging with you on Comfortably Domestic. So engage we shall!
I hope.
I guess that’s really up to you.
But if you want to engage–and I sure hope that you do–I’ll be here!
The weather in Northern Michigan has been really bizarre as of late. We awoke to snow on the first official day of spring. I mean, we can always expect a few flurries in early April but NOT ACCUMULATION! Obviously, April has earned the Top Spot on my Fecal Roster.
Daisy wouldn’t have minded the extra snow all that much, except for it necessitating that she burrow after the chipmunks that had been frolicking (read: tormenting her through the window) just a few days prior.
I’ve lived in Michigan for most of my life. We have a saying her in the mitten: if you don’t like the weather in Michigan, wait five minutes and it will change. True to form, we went from frozen flurries to balmy mid-50’s temperatures in a few short days. Daisy coped with the erratic forecast like any good northerner–she basked in the sun as if her life depended on it.
I must say that once the weather does warm up, watching little “rivers” worm their way through the ice on Grand Traverse Bay is breathtaking.
Spring soccer season has begun. Bacon Slayer was so kind as to volunteer to inflate twenty new soccer balls by hand so that I didn’t have to freeze to death trying to inflate them with the air compressor in the garage. I love him.
In other news, Son #2 agreed to a spring haircut. This is huge!! He’s a very tactile kid so the whole haircut experience can be a little traumatic for him. He did so well this time! I was so proud of him.
This might come as a shock, but lately I’ve been doing a fair amount of baking. The Baby has been my chief helper in this department. Actually, he’s totally taken over. He did acquiesce to allow me to help him, but “Mostly I’ll be doing everwyfing awl by myself.” That Son #4 is one tough cookie.
I keep saying that I’m not a cake decorator, and yet I can’t seem to say no to any request to decorate a cake for someone. It’s complicated.
So when I was asked to make a Lego Mini-Figure Head cake for a friend’s son’s birthday, of course I agreed. My new friend Amy brought over the mini-figure face that she wanted the cake modeled after. Then she requested that the cake be free of fondant. I admit that I was a little nervous, but think it turned out pretty well!
After the Lego cake, I was feeling pretty fearless in the kitchen. I also happened to be sitting on a few pounds of Meyer lemons that were practically begging to be transformed into lemon curd. They were pretty shameless about it, too. Who am I to deny such persistence? Since I had so many lemons, I decided to triple the usual batch of curd.
Pro Tip: if you ever think to triple a batch of lemon curd…don’t! I ended up with a full quart of curd! I had so much custard that I decided to try custard sticky buns. They looked so tempting going into the oven, but ended up nearly raw in the centers because stuffed them with way too much custard to allow the dough to fully cook.
The more you know.
I didn’t have time to wallow in my failure because that new friend Amy? She happens to have a pair of adorable one year old twin girls in need of birthday cakes. Amy chose these sweet little rose smash cakes for her girls…
and a simple rosette cake for the rest of the party goers. The top of the cake will be adorned with a single candle to symbolize her girls’ first birthday. I really, really, really loved making a girly pink cake! I guess I am a cake decorator from time to time.
I love butter. That is all.
If you’ve been around here for more than five minutes, y’all know that I’m not a morning person. I’m more of a sunset than a sunrise kind of person. This typical sunset over the Bay is why. I don’t think I’ll ever tire of that view! Especially since I don’t have to get up early in order to see it.
Until next time…
