Hubby is a hockey player. It’s one of the reasons that I married him.
OK, not really. I didn’t even know that he played hockey when we met, but I was a hockey fan. You can’t live in a city that is home to one of the “Original 6” and not be a hockey fan. It’s just not possible.
Geek Note: The Original 6 are the first six teams that comprised the National Hockey League (NHL) for the first 25 years–from the inception to the first expansion in 1967. They were the Detroit Red Wings, and 5 other, less significant teams. Only kidding. The original 6 were the Detroit Red Wings, The Chicago Blackhawks, The Toronto Maple Leafs, The Boston Bruins, The Montreal Canadiens, and the New York Rangers.
In these cities, some kids have hockey sticks in their hands before they can walk. Most hockey players started playing when they had barely enough balance to stand up on skates. Hockey can be a way of life.
But it wasn’t for Hubby. He grew up playing pond hockey, but never played anything more organized than that. But he wanted to. So when he was in college, he bought equipment, learned to play organized hockey in a rink, and hasn’t stopped playing. I mentioned once that hockey is kind of a cathartic thing for a lot of guys. Especially My Guy.
He’s not quite in the “Old Guys” league. But close. I have to say though, as a lifelong Red Wings fan, I really enjoy watching him play. They are not as fast as the professionals. In fact, once I took the boys to watch Hubby play, and we brought a little neighbor friend, who happens to play. After watching the first period the little neighbor turned to me and said “Um. Mrs. Kubert? Why are they so slow?’
I laughed so hard that I cried.
But there can be some pretty intense and high scoring games. It’s really fun to watch.
The boys love to watch their Daddy play so much that you’d swear we were going to an NHL game. (See the Baby clapping?)
The Baby likes to stand at the glass and yell “Dad-dy? Daddy!” He knows Daddy is out there somewhere.
Son #2 spends most of the games running up and down the bleachers. Hubby likes catching glimpses of his head bobbing up and down as he runs back and forth.
Son #3 being our little life of the party runs along with his brother and is sure to be shrieking even louder. He does have moments of being absolutely riveted to the glass, watching intently…
…when the Zamboni is cleaning the ice after the game. He will stand and watch until every last bit of ice has been freshly glazed. He wants to be a Zamboni Driver someday.
But I think Hubby is the one who enjoys the games the most. Maybe he just likes being the guy with the most fans in the stands.
