Toasted marshmallow malted hot chocolate. The name alone warms you up and makes you feel cozy, doesn’t it?
This is a guest post for my friend Kat @ Tenaciously Yours. Kat decided to temporarily vacate the frozen tundra that is Minnesota, in favor of sunshine and fruity drinks with umbrellas in them. Whatever.
I thought I’d share a few options of what she can do on her return to the great white north. Click here to see my post over at Kat’s place. And while you are at it, read her blog. She is a very funny and entertaining writer. If you miss it over there, it’ll be posted here tomorrow. But go visit Kat anyway.
Up in the northern mid western states, we can accumulate snow during 5 months out of the year. That’s a really long time. Believe me when I tell you that you will go stir crazy if you stay holed up in the house waiting for spring to arrive. We have to embrace the snow! Consequently, we do a lot of sledding and snow sports during the winter.
Warming up with a steamy mug of toasted marshmallow hot chocolate in front of a roaring fire is the single most effective way to warm up after frolicking in the frozen wet stuff. I whipped up this malted hot chocolate one day when a gaggle of snow-sodden kids declared our house the warming hut. Just for fun, I toasted the marshmallows on top. The kids thought that was the coolest thing ever.
To make the toasted marshmallow malted hot chocolate, you’ll need:
4 C. 2% Milk
½ C. Malted Milk powder
3 oz. semi-sweet chocolate
Marshmallows
Special Equipment: Kitchen Torch (optional)
Finely chop the semi-sweet chocolate, and set it aside.
Pour the milk into a medium sized saucepan.
Grab some malted milk. This is the brand that I found at our local grocery store. It’s in the powdered and canned milk area of the baking aisle. Don’t worry about the container being so large–malted milk is also excellent added to pancakes, cookies, smoothies, and milkshakes.
Add the malted milk powder to the liquid milk, and stir until it is fully dissolved. Heat the milk mixture over medium heat until very hot, but not quite boiling.
Turn off the heat, and add the finely chopped chocolate. Stir constantly until the chocolate has completely melted. Ladle the malted hot chocolate into mugs.
Plop in as many marshmallows as you want. My boys figure if there is any head space at the top of the mug, it should be stuffed with as many marshmallows as possible. You can drink it as is, or you can have a little fun with it…
…and grab a kitchen torch!
At the risk of sounding like a complete kitchen-gadget-nerd, I must confess that I’ve been dying to toast marshmallows on top of hot chocolate for years. Years. The thought came to me one day after snowshoeing, and I just couldn’t shake it. That was the motivating factor behind me getting a kitchen torch. Being able to caramelize the sugar that sits on creme brulee is just an added bonus. Crazy, eh? Clearly, I have too much time on my hands.
Fire up the torch. Moving very quickly from side to side, toast the marshmallows. If you keep the flame in one spot for more than half of a second, the marshmallow can catch on fire. Just like making s’mores! If that happens, don’t panic. Turn off the torch and blow out the flaming toasted marshmallow. It’s the adversity that makes it memorable.
Serve the toasted marshmallow malted hot chocolate after a fun romp in the snow.
Be sure to include a large spoon to scoop up the toasted marshmallow-y goodness.
Not-so-fine-print: I am in no way advocating the use of a kitchen torch by anyone other than a responsible adult. Instruments of fire are off limits to children, and should be stored accordingly. Kitchen torches should not be used with beverages that contain alcohol. Be sure to keep flame away from flammable objects and clothing. If you have any doubt about whether or not you can safely operate a kitchen torch, please refrain from doing so. Please insert any other common sense liability verbiage here.
